In March 1896, a disciplined Ethiopian army achieved the unthinkable, defeating an invading Italian force and halting Italy’s conquest in Africa.
At a time when European powers were claiming much of the continent, Ethiopia’s victory preserved its independence and challenged the belief that all of Africa would fall under colonial rule.
