Nigeria Senate to Amend Constitution for State Police Creation Before End of 2026
The Senate will restart constitutional review proceedings when plenary sessions resume next week, the Senate spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu told a local news outlet.
The creation of state police commands broad public support across Nigeria, he noted.
“The President has signed into it, the state governors too have signed into it, and the National Assembly is in love with it,” Adaramodu added.
The move follows President Bola Tinubu's call to introduce the amendment as part of the country's security overhaul, the news outlet said.
“What I am asking for tonight is for you to start thinking how best to amend the constitution to incorporate the state police for us to secure our country, take over our forests from marauders, free our children from fear,” he emphasized.
