Nelson Mandela Rules Academy is 'for Africa, Not Just South Africa': Head of Correctional Services
The central idea behind Nelson Mandela’s group revolves around the concept of rehabilitation, Makgothi Thobakgale, National Commissioner of Correctional Services told Sputnik Africa.
"We have a responsibility to correct, rehabilitate you, so that when you come back to society, you now contribute positively and you also encourage others in order to commit crime," the speaker emphasized.
In 2025, at the UNGA, South Africa joined the world in celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Nelson Mandela Rules, the speaker said. These are the universal UN standards for the treatment of offenders, renamed in 2015 from the minimum rules first adopted in the 1990s, he explained.
"We also went there to report that the following year, which is 2026, this year, we will now be launching the Nelson Mandela Rules Academy in South Africa, the first one in Africa."
