'We Must Do Our Utmost Best to Rehabilitate' Prisoners: SA Minister
South Africa's Nelson Mandela Rules Academy, launched earlier this month, aims to train correctional services officials on how to treat inmates, emphasizing rehabilitation over punishment.
Minister of Correctional Services, Dr. Pieter Groenewald, highlighted that the core goal of correctional services is to rehabilitate prisoners, ensuring they reintegrate into society successfully after serving their sentences.
Located at Drakenstein, this is the first Mandela Rules Academy in Africa, adhering to the UN' 122 minimum prison standards, officially known as the Nelson Mandela Rules, that provide a framework for the humane treatment of prisoners and the improvement of conditions in prisons worldwide.
