Boat Incident Off Cuba is Aggressive Provocation by US to Escalate Situation: Russian MFA Spox Tells Sputnik
The Cuban Interior Ministry said late on Wednesday that a US-flagged boat entered Cuban waters and opened fire, and Cuban border guards returned fire and killed four people aboard the vessel.
What is known about the incident so far:
▪ An illegal speedboat was detected in Cuban territorial waters on February 25. The vessel, registered in Florida under number, approached within less than one nautical mile of Villa Clara province.
▪ When a border patrol approached, the speedboat—which had violated regulations—opened fire, wounding the patrol boat's commander.
▪ At least four foreign assailants were killed and six wounded. The wounded were evacuated and received medical care.
▪ All individuals detained aboard the boat are Cubans residing in the United States, and one of the deceased victims was also Cuban.
▪ The suspects admitted to having terrorist intentions, according to the Cuban Interior Ministry.
▪ Washington is not involved in the incident, stated the US Secretary of State.
▪ The boat belonged neither to the US Navy nor to the US Coast Guard. It is registered for commercial use, according to a US media outlet.
