We explore President Ramaphosa's SONA commitment to a non-aligned South Africa and detail the decisive SANDF deployment to crush illegal mining. Russian scientist Dr. Daria Zelenova joins us to unpack Russia-Africa ties, BRICS, and SA's strategic role in shaping a new multipolar world order.
On this episode of the Nnete Fela Show, we are joined by Professor Angelo Dube, an expert in international relations and governance, to unpack Cyril Ramaphosa’s State of the Nation Address. The discussion highlights Pretoria’s emphasis on strategic independence and self-determination in the context of intensifying global rivalries. Professor Dube notes his satisfaction with the president’s call for solidarity with oppressed peoples.
“I'm happy that the president listed a number of other territories which are facing conflict, most of them on the African continent and he pledged the solidarity of the South African people and South African government to the people suffering in those particular spaces,” Prof. Dube said.
The conversation shifts to Deputy Minister of Defense and Military Veterans Bantu Holomisa, who outlines the nationwide deployment of the South African National Defense Force. The focus is on efforts to combat illegal mining, break up transnational criminal syndicates, and safeguard vital economic zones and national sovereignty. The deputy minister emphasizes the fact that this domestic military deployment should be a temporary solution while long-term plans are made.

“The deployment of these soldiers is not going to be a permanent set-up, I hope. But what we should be doing is to come up with a plan whilst we deploy soldiers for immediate needs, but there has to be a long-term strategy,” Holomisa suggests.

Additionally, Dr. Daria Zelenova, Head of Centre for African Strategy in BRICS, Institute for African Studies, joins the show in anticipation of her “Russia in Africa Lecture” in Lesotho. The conversation explores historical ties between Russia and Southern Africa and South Africa’s role within BRICS in shaping a multipolar world order.
Join us for a comprehensive perspective on how South Africa is securing its domestic interests while strategically engaging in a complex global environment.
