African Union Commission Hails Ethiopia’s Wheat Production Success as 'Historic Milestone'
“Africa spends between $70 billion and $100 billion annually on food imports; wheat accounts for the largest share. Ethiopia’s experience has demonstrated in practice that this expenditure can be replaced through domestic production,” said AU Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy and Sustainable Environment, Moses Vilakati.
The commissioner noted that the AU has closely followed Ethiopia’s rapid transition from dependency to becoming a wheat exporter, describing the recorded results as highly encouraging and an impressive success story.
Vilakati also called on other African countries to follow Ethiopia’s example in order to strengthen food security across the continent.
