Employment Challenges Are More Common Than Different, SADC Senior Official Says

With unemployment across SADC countries ranging from 8% to over 37%, Aggy Moiloa, SADC Chair of Senior Officials for Employment and Labor Sector, stressed that young people remain the hardest hit.

Beyond joblessness, the region faces casualization, seasonal work without permanency, substandard wages, and limited access to social security and workplace protections.

“For us, things that are challenges are more common to us than they are different. We all face various issues,” she told Sputnik Africa on the sidelines of the SADC Employment and Labor Sector meeting.

The meeting is reviewing whether member states are truly implementing agreed labor policies, ratifying core conventions, and advancing decent work standards — including health and safety, workers’ rights, and social protection.

On regional mobility, Moiloa emphasized balancing easier movement among neighbors with the need for regulated, legal immigration.

The goal: stronger coordination without compromising border controls.
