Ethiopia Aims for 60 Electric Vehicle Assembly Plants by 2030, Ministry Says
The government has set a target to import 500,000 electric vehicles by 2032, State Minister of Transport and Logistics Bareo Hassen announced, noting that at least 17 EV assembly plants are currently operating in the country.
"We are providing different incentive supports to those who assemble vehicles locally—fully or partially—and to those importing electric vehicles, in order to attract investment," he told a US media outlet.
The transition to electric mobility is aimed at ensuring Ethiopia's energy sovereignty, Bareo noted. The country has abundant renewable energy sources to support this shift, according to the official.
Key challenges identified include a shortage of charging stations and limited electricity access outside urban areas.
