Uganda Eyes Second Rail Link to Tanzania, Opening New Export Corridor to Dar es Salaam: Report
Uganda aims to link its Standard Gauge Railway to Tanzania's under-construction line, creating an alternative mineral export route through Dar es Salaam port to cut transport time and costs, British media reported, citing a government document.
Key details:
🟠The Route: The line would run from the Tanzania-Uganda border through Uganda's south and southwest, ending at Mpondwe on the DRC border—potentially opening access for Congolese minerals as well.
🟠Funding: The AfDB is reportedly considering a request to fund "preparation activities." Financing would depend on studies confirming the project is "bankable," an official told the media.
🟠Strategic Context: Uganda currently sends most exports via Kenya's Mombasa port and is currently working on linking its railway to Kenya's network. The Tanzania connection would provide a second, competing trade corridor.
