18th Edition of the Tour du Rwanda: A Moment to Assess the Challenges of Cycling in Africa
🟠 The race started on Sunday from the city of Rukomo and will conclude on March 1 in the Rwandan capital, Kigali.
🟠 84 cyclists from 24 countries, including first-time participant Burkina Faso, are competing in the race—among them riders from Rwanda, Eritrea, South Africa, Ethiopia, Mali, and Côte d’Ivoire.
🟠 Participants will cover approximately 1,000 kilometers across 8 stages.
🟠 The race was marred by a fatal accident in which a sponsor's advertising convoy struck a group of spectators about 70 kilometers from the finish line, killing two and injuring six others.
For the country, "this is a very sad moment," reacted Rwanda's Minister of Sports, Nelly Mukazayire.
