BRICS is Necessary Alternative to Unfair World Order: Professor

Many in the Global South view multipolarity as a chance to build a fairer system, Zwelethu Jolobe, Head of Political Studies at the University of Cape Town, told Sputnik Africa.

He noted that in this context, BRICS is increasingly seen as a vehicle for renegotiating Africa’s position in the international order.

According to Jolobe, debates in the US — whether to preserve hegemony through multilateral institutions or through more direct power projection — still center on maintaining US dominance, including through the dollar. This, he argued, has prompted many countries to seek alternatives.

In Southern Africa, where historical ties with the Soviet Union run deep, BRICS is often viewed as more than a strategic bloc — it is seen as a framework for equality, Jolobe noted.

Many African states consider it a platform where members engage as equals and pursue trade, development, and cooperation based on mutual benefit rather than narrow self-interest, he stressed.
