Somalia Food Aid May Halt by April, Leaving Millions at Risk of Deeper Hunger: UN

"The situation is deteriorating at an alarming rate," Ross Smith, the UN World Food Programme (WFP) director of emergency preparedness and response, stated.

Somalia declared a national drought emergency in November after repeated poor rains, with neighboring countries also affected. Due to funding shortages, the WFP has already reduced assistance from 2.2 million people to just over 600,000, sharply cutting nutrition support for pregnant and breastfeeding women and young children.

Somalia faces a critical moment similar to 2022, when famine was narrowly averted by large-scale international backing, the agency said, noting that it needs $95 million to continue operations from March to August.

Smith cautioned that if even the reduced aid stops, the humanitarian, security, and economic consequences would be devastating and felt beyond Somalia’s borders.
