South Africa Needs to Take Advantage of Richness in Both Minerals & Agricultural Sector: Professor
The recent export of South African plums to China, following a bilateral agreement granting 0% tariff access to South African agricultural products, is part of an "extremely transformative" shift in competitiveness, David Monyae, Director of the Centre for Africa-China Studies at the University of Johannesburg, told Sputnik Africa.
According to the expert, the development immediately boosts the country’s price competitiveness and lowers landed costs, positioning its fruit as a premium yet affordable option.
As a new player in the Chinese market, South Africa stands to benefit significantly if it manages the opportunity well, he added.
The professor highlighted the importance of branding South African products to compete in China’s 1.4 billion-strong market.
South Africa must move beyond geopolitics to become a preferred player within BRICS+, Monyae emphasized, pointing out that the global shift of wealth and demand toward Asia presents significant opportunities if approached strategically.
