Defender of the Fatherland Day: Zimbabwe Reaffirms Strategic Defence Ties With Russia

The two countries enjoy long-standing relations dating back to Zimbabwe's liberation struggle, when Moscow extended solidarity and support to Harare's fight for independence, Defence Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri stated on the occasion.

Sovereign nations must be allowed to determine their own development paths without coercion or sanctions, Muchinguri-Kashiri stressed, noting the importance of a multipolar world order.

She reiterated Harare’s commitment to strengthening bilateral and multilateral partnerships that promote mutual respect and non-interference. Both sides describe their ties as a "time-tested friendship," deepened through defence agreements and joint economic initiatives.

Defender of the Fatherland Day, observed annually on February 23, honors members of Russia's armed forces and celebrates the country's military heritage.
