South Africa’s condemnation of Israel’s West Bank settlement expansion, alongside over 80 nations, is more than a political stance—it is a moral one, deeply rooted in the country’s own struggle against apartheid, Professor Usuf Chikte told Sputnik Africa.
Chikte stressed the significance of the two-state solution as a path to peace, but Israel’s rejection of it has led to a stagnant situation where "where Palestinians are under occupation, apartheid, and genocide."
Drawing a direct parallel between South Africa’s apartheid past and Israel’s treatment of Palestinians, Chikte stated:

"Apartheid is a systematic discrimination of one group of people against the other based on racial supremacy and the Israeli nation state laws state that Israel is a nation state of Jews and Jews alone, which makes it impossible for the Palestinians to exercise their self-determination."

Chikte emphasized the importance of international law in holding Israel accountable.

"Around the 1970s, the United Nations invoked the apartheid convention, which stated that apartheid is a crime against humanity and that convention is still there today for anybody who commits apartheid," he said.

South Africa’s historical experience gives it a unique moral responsibility to fight for justice:

"South Africa has a great moral standing in the world because they know what apartheid is. [...] We carry that moral obligation with us, and we owe it to the world that has supported us to ensure that apartheid doesn’t re-exist anywhere else."

As part of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions campaign, South Africa is pushing for the isolation of Israel, calling for a halt to trade, particularly coal, and an arms embargo.

"We're calling on South Africans and we're calling on our government to ensure that they up the game at the ICJ and not to buckle under the pressure," Chikte said.

What measures could be taken to stop Israel's actions? Watch the video to find out and learn about some unfortunate historical parallels that are still taking place.
