The data, covering October 1 to December 31, 2025, show 6,381 murder cases recorded nationwide — 602 fewer than in the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year, Firoz Cachalia announced at a media briefing in Pretoria.Broader crime figures also showed improvement, with 12,682 fewer cases of violent offences reported to police year on year — a 6.7% decrease over the quarter, Cachalia noted.A coordinated government and public effort is needed to bring crime down to acceptable levels, Cachalia emphasized.

South Africa Logs 8.7% Decline in Murders in Third Quarter of 2025/2026: Acting Police Minister
21:12 20.02.2026 (Updated: 22:21 20.02.2026) The data, covering October 1 to December 31, 2025, show 6,381 murder cases recorded nationwide — 602 fewer than in the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year, Firoz Cachalia announced at a media briefing in Pretoria.
Broader crime figures also showed improvement, with 12,682 fewer cases of violent offences reported to police year on year — a 6.7% decrease over the quarter, Cachalia noted.
"While we welcome the declines in most categories of violent and property crime, overall levels remain unacceptably high," the official stressed.
A coordinated government and public effort is needed to bring crime down to acceptable levels, Cachalia emphasized.
"This is a priority and is achievable," he added.
