Ghana Files International Arbitration Claim Over Maritime Border Dispute With Togo

The decision aims to prevent further escalation of incidents that have strained relations between the two nations and to promote a peaceful resolution while preserving good bilateral ties, Ghana's presidency noted in a statement.

“This follows attempts at negotiating a boundary which have gone on for the past eight years but have not resulted in an agreed outcome,” it added.

In early 2018, Togolese authorities blocked two Ghanaian vessels from conducting exploration activities in the contested border zone, insisting the area belonged to Togo.

🟠Ghana advocates for delimitation based on the equidistance principle, in line with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

🟠Togo seeks a boundary adjustment, citing the region's historical and geographical characteristics.
