China's Zero-Tariff Policy to Energize South-South Trade
“Well, I'm seeing the Global South countries closing ranks and then collectively setting their independence from the West, which has dominated the global economic system for a long time now. It is important for the Global South countries to realize that lucrative markets are not only found in the West, but they are also found in the Global South. So, trading with each other can only accelerate the global economic power shift from the West to the East. With more economic power, Global South countries can be able to shape the global order in line with their interests.”
#PanAfricanFrequency sat down with Dr. Sizo Nkala, a postdoctoral research fellow at the Centre for Africa-China Studies, University of Johannesburg, to discuss how 53 African countries have duty-free access to the world’s second-largest economy as a result of China’s zero-tariff policy and how this might transform Africa’s trade landscape and influence its economic development.
Join us on this fascinating discussion as we unpack how this policy signifies a shift in the world order economic story, from the North-South axis to the South-South.
Share with us in the comments where you're from and which sectors in your country you think will get the best benefits from these tariff cuttings.
