Tanzania to Revive Live Animal Trade: Minister
The government will allow baboons and monkeys to be sold instead of killed, aiming to reduce their numbers in residential areas and generate revenue, Ashatu Kijaji, the Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism, said.
“Previously, we managed live wild animals, but the practice stopped in 2016 due to challenges. Government instructions have now directed us to address it. Currently, we have been forced to kill more than 247 baboons due to this problem,” the minister said.
Local residents expressed frustration over years of crop destruction by animals, requesting the minister's help in removing them, as they damage seeds and trample young crops, according to local media. They highlighted the animals' impact on farming, stating they had made it impossible to work the land, leaving citizens without food.
