African-Led Mediation 'Will Have More Credibility' in Securing South Sudan's Peace, Says SA Analyst

Such mediation "will be more acceptable" because it comes from countries that "share the values and interests" of the nation in crisis, Prof. Dirk Kotze, International Politics Analyst at UNISA, told Sputnik Africa.

His remarks follow South African President Ramaphosa’s recent appeal for AU unity on South Sudan—a stance Kotze says aligns with South Africa’s foreign policy since Mandela, centered on peacemaking and post-conflict recovery.

The AU can foster cooperation among South Sudanese parties, rally international backing, and help prevent election-related violence, while countries like South Africa can support with electoral know-how and security assurances, the speaker noted.

While South Sudan's stabilization could bolster regional integration, the ongoing armed conflict in the Republic of Sudan remains "more troublesome" with no indication of peace, according to Kotze.
