Black South Africans' Share of Top Income Bracket Grows Over 30 Years: Study
Black households now account for 41% of South Africa's top income bracket, up from 29% in 2012, according to a study by the University of Cape Town's Liberty Institute of Strategic Marketing.
Meanwhile, the share of white households in this category has declined to 41% from 61%, according to the study.
The number of Black South Africans earning above 22,000 rand ($1,377) per month quadrupled to more than 7 million in 2024, from 2012 levels, the study found.
Despite gains at upper income levels, Black South Africans continue to make up the majority of the country's poor, the study reveals.
