Intensive Search Underway for Five Miners Trapped Following Mudslide at Kimberley Diamond Mine, SA
A mudslide struck a tunnel approximately 890 meters underground at the Ekapa Mining Joint Shaft in Northern Cape, early Tuesday morning, according to the SABC news agency.
Following the incident, mining operations were suspended, and emergency response protocols were immediately activated.
Search and rescue operations are currently underway, with efforts focused on water pumping, material removal, and drilling towards possible areas of refuge for the five trapped mineworkers, according to local media. Several specialist proto-teams from neighboring mines have been mobilized to assist in the search.
Communication with the trapped miners has been cut off, and at this stage, they remain unaccounted for. The Department of Mineral Resources and Petroleum has been formally notified, and Ekapa Minerals is fully cooperating with the relevant authorities.
The families of the affected workers have been informed, and support measures are being put in place.
The company has not yet speculated on the cause of the incident but remains committed to transparent communication and ensuring the well-being of its workforce.
