At Least 3.5 Million Return to Sudan as Conditions Stabilize, but Crisis Remains Dire: UN

That figure includes more than 721,000 refugees, who returned to Sudan as more regions stabilize, Mamadou Balde, UNHCR Regional Coordinator in Sudan, told a UN briefing.

Key points:

🟠Regions of return include Al-Jazeera and Khartoum states.

🟠Despite returns, Balde called Sudan's situation the "worst humanitarian crisis" globally.

🟠Over 4.3 million Sudanese refugees remain in neighboring countries, with another 470,000 expected in 2026.

🟠UNHCR and partners are launching a $1.6 billion response plan to provide food and shelter.
