Ethiopia's Desire for Sea Access 'Has No Expansionist Purpose': Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed
The sea access issue is an existential matter for the country, he said in his message on the occasion of the Ramadan fasting season.
"We affirm to the entire world that Ethiopia has no geographic ambitions of any kind, nor any desire for expansion, and likewise has no intention of threatening the security of our neighbors."
Abiy Ahmed added that the effort to obtain sea access is peaceful and based on mutual benefit.
"Ethiopia's sea access question is a 'critical existential issue' based on population growth and the need for development, and it is not something that violates the sovereignty of others or harms their interests."
Regarding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, he pointed out that using water resources for development does not mean reducing the share of others and that the river should serve for cooperation rather than conflict.
