Africa Takes Reparations to the UN: Ghana’s President to Table Landmark Resolution in March

President John Dramani Mahama announced that he will present a historic resolution to the UN General Assembly in March 2026 seeking global recognition of the Transatlantic Slave Trade as the gravest crime against humanity—a move already adopted by the AU.

All peoples of African descent have been waiting for this day, Mahama said as AU Champion for Justice and Reparations, adding that “the truth cannot be buried,” and that the legal and moral case for reparations is undeniable.

The resolution caps a year of continental mobilization—including new AU reparations bodies—and follows the AU’s designation of 2025 as the Year of Justice for Africans through Reparations, according to Ghana’s presidency.

Mahama urged all member states to create national reparations commissions, engage perpetrator nations, and back a proposed Decade of Reparations.
