African Leaders Wrap Up 39th AU Summit in Addis Ababa on Sunday: Key Outcomes

The African Union’s 39th Assembly concluded in Addis Ababa with a focus on 2026 as the Year of Sustainable Water and Sanitation under Agenda 2063.

Key results:

🟠New AU Chair: Burundi’s President Evariste Ndayishimiye elected for 2026, succeeding Angola’s João Lourenço.

🟠2026 Theme Launched: “Ensuring sustainable water availability and safe sanitation systems to achieve the goals of Agenda 2063.”

🟠Peace & Security: Reaffirmed zero tolerance for unconstitutional changes of government; called for predictable funding for AU peace operations; adopted MoU on operationalizing the African Standby Force.
