Algeria Decontaminating Former French Nuclear Test Sites on Its Own: MoD
Faced with France’s silence, Algeria has begun independently decontaminating former French nuclear test sites in the Sahara, starting at In Ekker in Tamanrasset Province, the Defense Ministry announced.
“The decontamination of the sites where explosions enabled France to acquire a weapon of mass destruction is being carried out by Algerian experts,” the ministry said, highlighting the effort in its documentary “Algerians at the Heart of Challenges.” (video )
France conducted 17 nuclear tests in the Algerian Sahara between 1960 and 1966, including 13 underground tests at In Ekker. Algeria has repeatedly asked France to take responsibility and assist in decontamination—without success.
