Why Selection of Next UN Secretary-General Matters to Africa? — Liberian FM Weighs In

Africa’s priority is a UN leader who can prevent conflict, respond swiftly, and build timely, integrated peace mechanisms to stop future crises, Sara Frances Beysolow Nyanti told Sputnik Africa on the sidelines of the 39th AU Summit in Addis Ababa.

Key points from the minister:

🟠On the UN and Reform: Current reform discussions—like merging UN agencies—aren’t enough. Africa needs a secretary-general (SG) with the vision and mandate to drive real, transformative change at the ground level.

🟠On Partnerships: Nyanti stressed that Africa isn’t seeking “handouts or aid”—though she acknowledged aid’s role in humanitarian crises—but rather investment and equal, mutually beneficial partnerships that create jobs, as “peace and security will never be sustained if we don’t have development.”

🟠On African Unity: A “coalition of the willing” of African foreign ministers and experts is backing the A3 (Liberia, Somalia, DRC) to shape Africa’s shared criteria for the SG selection and steer multilateralism toward real continental needs.
