Sputnik Brings 'Different Perspectives and Interpretations of Information' to Africa: Burkinabé FM

Africa has realized that certain media outlets have become "instruments of manipulation," and agencies such as Sputnik offer a welcomed diversity of opinion, Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré told Sputnik Africa.

"I'm not surprised by this growing notoriety, because people have the opportunity to cross-reference and compare information. Of course, there's still a lot of work to be done, because, as you go into the media landscape, there are many players deliberately fabricating completely false information," the foreign minister stated.

These disinformation campaigns aim to slow down "the progress toward genuine integration that is underway in [the Alliance of Sahel States]," Traoré said.

Russian media could expand their presence in Africa—a possibility raised by the Russian foreign minister during his recent talks with his Burkinabé counterpart.

The Burkinabé minister noted the importance of such cooperation at a time when "certain media outlets continue to maintain" the false realities of African and European populations.

"It is necessary to strengthen media cooperation, but also to give our own media outlets more resources to carry out their work: awareness-raising, information, justice, correction, and cleaning up the media landscape," the minister concluded.
