Kenya–Somalia Border Reopening: Security Step or Political Gamble?

After 15 years of closure, the Kenya–Somalia border is set to reopen in April following a resolution by Kenya’s National Security Council, according to President William Ruto.

ℹ The border was shut in 2011 amid escalating attacks by Al-Shabaab*, cross-border kidnappings, and Kenya’s military intervention in Somalia.

In a report from Sputnik Africa’s correspondent in Kenya, Ridah Chebet, Jaware M., CEO of Triple The Impact Center of Governance and Public Engagement, argues the decision may be politically motivated, linking it to the 2027 re-election climate and ongoing concerns about alleged voter registration irregularities involving non-Kenyans.

Critics also question whether the security issues that led to the closure — including the 2015 Garissa University terror attack — have been fully addressed.

The border reopening presents both promise and risk. While the government describes it as a security-backed decision, skeptics see political calculations at play. Ultimately, its success will depend on transparency, safeguards, and public trust.

April will mark more than a reopening — it will be a test of intent.
