South Africa’s Sovereignty Stance Means Firmly Defending Its National Interests Amid Growing Global Pressures: Expert
As Africa's richest economy, South Africa must align its positions with its status and influence, Professor Angelo Dube, Governance & International Relations expert, told Sputnik Africa, commenting on Ramaphosa's address, which declared the country's sacrosanct commitment to sovereignty and self-determination.
He emphasized that sovereignty, a core principle upheld by the UN, remains central to South Africa's approach.
South Africa "has been doing the best that it could" to diversify its trade, balancing diplomatic ties with the US while ensuring it is not overly reliant on Washington, Dube stated.
He also called for greater domestic refining of raw materials to create jobs and urged BRICS to move beyond rhetoric and focus on enhancing intra-group trade.
Unlike the US, which often uses military threats, South Africa prioritizes diplomacy, the rule of law, and multilateralism. The country will continue to use its diplomatic voice to condemn human rights abuses and advocate for global justice, Dube concluded.
"Africa first means that Africa must first and foremost, prioritize the African person and African values. [...] Ubuntu is one of those African values where we value the humanity of the next human being because it's an African thing to do."
