Africans at Winter Olympics: 'It's Important for Us to Show That We're Present'
Mialitiana Clerc, a Malagasy alpine skier and the first African woman to compete in three editions of the Winter Olympic Games (2018, 2022, 2026), spoke with Sputnik Africa about her experience and the symbolic significance of her journey.
Proud to represent her country's colors, she believes that "some athletes who now represent their African countries have followed the same example as me."
"In alpine skiing, more and more African countries are establishing their profiles and bringing athletes to the Olympic Games or at least to international competitions... Now, I think Africa is really establishing itself very well," Clerc insisted.
She said she received many messages of support from her compatriots.
"All that I want to share in these moments is really good spirits and joy, and that's what people like as well—it's that, in fact, African countries often really bring the atmosphere at the Olympics; we smile, we laugh."
