South Africa’s $15.1 Billion Agricultural Export Surge Reflects Strategic Shift, SA Economist Says

The country’s agricultural exports were driven by a favorable agricultural season and expanding markets, particularly within Africa and Asia, Wandile Sihlobo, Chief Economist of the Agricultural Business Chamber, told Sputnik Africa.

He highlighted the importance of key commodities like fruits, maize, and red meat in this growth.

Sihlobo explained that South Africa’s focus is on expanding its presence in markets like China, India, Saudi Arabia, and within Africa, where growth potential is significant.

“We are optimistic about this surge, but our focus is also on addressing infrastructure challenges and increasing intra-BRICS trade,” he noted.

He also stressed the importance of the African Continental Free Trade Area in increasing Africa’s global competitiveness and ensuring long-term economic sustainability for South Africa and “shared prosperity in this region.”

However, as demand for South African produce grows, Sihlobo emphasized that domestic food security is not being compromised:

“Before we send anything outside, we ensure domestic needs are met.”
