Africa Must Reclaim Its Sovereignty: Sanctions Outside UN Law are Unacceptable, Zimbabwe’s FM Says

Amon Murwira emphasized his country’s commitment to international law, stating that sanctions imposed without UN approval are illegal. He reflected on Zimbabwe's resilience despite such sanctions:

"Zimbabwe complies with international law and subscribes to international law," he told Sputnik Africa at the 48th Ordinary Session of the AU Executive Council.

Regarding Zimbabwe’s BRICS membership application, he underscored the country's belief in multilateralism:

"We are encouraged to join organizations that stand for peace and human progress, and BRICS is one of them."

He also stressed the need for reform in the United Nations to better represent Africa.

"The United Nations as we speak today does not reflect [the] reality," referring to Africa's colonial past.

On Africa's resource governance, the minister expressed confidence in the continent's journey toward sovereignty, citing the African Union as a key guide in Africa’s ongoing development.
