South Africa Honors 36 Years Since Mandela's Release
"36 years ago [...] the eyes of the world were fixed on the gates just beyond where we stand now," President Cyril Ramaphosa said during his visit to Madiba House, where Nelson Mandela spent the final years of his imprisonment.
His words commemorated the exact anniversary of Mandela's momentous release on February 11, 1990.
The momentous march towards liberation was a crucial juncture in South Africa's journey towards democracy, culminating in Mandela's ascension to the presidency as the first leader chosen through democratic elections in 1994.
