Africa’s Global Rise is Reshaping Diplomacy, Russian Ambassador to South Africa Says
Modern diplomacy today is about far more than formal representation — it requires listening, trust, and sustained engagement across the political, economic, and public spheres, Roman Ambarov said in an interview with Sputnik Africa on the occasion of Diplomat's Day.
He briefly noted that his dual accreditation to South Africa and Lesotho, which recently marked 46 years of diplomatic relations with Russia, gives him a broader regional perspective and helps strengthen cooperation and development across Southern Africa.
Speaking on Russia’s engagement with Africa, Ambarov highlighted what Sergey Lavrov has called the continent’s “new awakening,” pointing to tangible results (see the video).
Beyond economics, Ambarov stressed the political dimension of relations, arguing that party-to-party diplomacy adds real weight to state ties. He described long-standing cooperation with the African National Congress, saying such engagement is “practical, not symbolic” and helps strengthen the political foundation of Russia–South Africa relations.
