Ethiopia Accuses Eritrea of Escalation, Demands Troop Withdrawal: MFA
Addis Ababa demands Eritrea cease cooperation with rebel groups—calling recent military incursions and joint maneuvers with insurgents “open aggression,” FM Gideon Timothewos said to his Eritrean counterpart in a letter circulating online.
Ethiopia is ready for good-faith talks on respecting sovereignty—including sea access and the port of Assab—if Eritrea complies, according to the letter.
A Western media outlet reported that Ethiopian MFA spokesman Nebiat Getachew confirmed the authenticity of the letter—though the ministry has not yet officially released it.
Eritrea’s 1993 independence left Ethiopia landlocked. Last autumn, Addis Ababa accused Asmara of colluding with the Tigray People’s Liberation Front in active war preparations.
