Somalia Will Fight if Israel Sends Troops Into Somaliland, Says President

"We will fight in our capacity [...] We will defend ourselves [...] We are against that and will never allow that," Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud told Al Jazeera in response to a question about the potential deployment of Israeli troops in Somalia's breakaway region of Somaliland.

Currently, there are no Israeli troops in Somaliland, and the Somali authorities do not expect them to arrive in the near future, the president noted.

In December 2025, President Mahmoud cited intelligence reports that one of the conditions for Israel's recognition of Somaliland would be the establishment of an Israeli military base on the Gulf of Aden coast.

Israel was the first country in the world to recognize the breakaway Somali territory. Many nations and organizations strongly condemned the recognition as a violation of Somalia's sovereignty and international law.
