Modern Diagnostics Are Changing Cancer Survival in Tanzania, Oncologist Says
Technologies such as PET-CT scans and genetic testing are helping doctors diagnose cancer earlier and guide patients toward targeted and immunotherapy, improving survival rates, Dr. Frank Ruta told Sputnik Africa.
However, treatment costs remain a major challenge for many citizens, he noted, but added that government support has made care more affordable and ensured steady access to chemotherapy drugs.
Tanzania has not been severely affected by cuts in international funding, as the government has worked to keep medicines and facilities available, according to Ruta.
While local production of cancer drugs is still limited, he said partnerships with industry and continued investment are helping expand access to advanced treatments.
He also highlighted the importance of international collaboration, including with countries like Russia, to benefit from emerging vaccines and research.
Above all, he urged Africans to prioritize prevention and early screening, warning that many patients seek help only when cancer is advanced.
“If you do screening and the disease is caught up in a very early stage, treatment becomes very easy,” he stressed.
