US Signals Sanctions and Leverage to Block Algeria–Russia Military Ties

During a hearing of the US Subcommittee on Near East, South Asia, Central Asia, and Counterterrorism, Senator Jeanne Shaheen raised concerns over reports that Algeria has purchased Russian fighter jets and is considering additional deals due to delays in US deliveries.

Responding, Robert J. Palladino, senior US State Department official, stressed that such transactions could trigger sanctions under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act, noting that they are “concerning” and “something that we will watch closely.”

When asked how the US might disincentivize Russian-Algerian military cooperation, Palladino acknowledged that Washington uses diplomatic leverage, “often in private,” to “advance our interests and stop behavior which is not acceptable.”
