Mozambique Marks Heroes’ Day: Honoring the Architects of Freedom

February 3 honors Eduardo Mondlane, who was assassinated on this day in 1969. As the founder and first president of FRELIMO, he helped unite the nation and shape the liberation struggle.

Though his death was a great loss, it strengthened the resolve to continue fighting. In his memory, February 3 was declared Heroes’ Day, honoring all who sacrificed for independence.

That struggle was fulfilled on June 25, 1975, when Mozambique gained freedom, ending decades of colonial rule.

Today, we remember some of the many heroes who shaped the nation:

Samora Machel (1933–1986)

Commander of FRELIMO’s armed forces and Mozambique’s first post-independence president, Machel led the country to sovereignty in 1975. He was a strong advocate for social justice, Pan-Africanism, and resistance to apartheid in Southern Africa.

Josina Machel (1945–1971)

A pioneer of women’s participation in the struggle, she helped organize the Women’s Detachment and promoted education and equality.

Marcelino dos Santos (1929–2020)

A co-founder of FRELIMO, diplomat, and intellectual, he played a key role in shaping the movement’s ideology and strengthening international solidarity.

Filipe Samuel Magaia (1937–1966)

FRELIMO’s first Commander-in-Chief, he led early military operations and laid the foundations for the armed struggle before his assassination.

Uria Simango (1926–1977)

An early vice-president of FRELIMO, he contributed to mobilization and political organization during the formative years of the movement.

Armando Guebuza (born 1943)

A veteran of the liberation war, he later served as president and helped shape post-independence governance.

As Eduardo Mondlane once said:

“We are fighting together and together we are reconstructing and recreating our country, making a new reality—a new Mozambique, united and free.”
