Remembering the Death of Apartheid: 36 Years Ago, FW de Klerk Unbanned Democratic Elections in South Africa

"It came about as a result of a combination of all the efforts that put pressure on the apartheid regime," Mcebisi Skwatsha, the board chair of the country's Land Bank, told Sputnik Africa on the occasion.

He noted that the intense work led by the liberation movement, and ANC President Oliver Tambo in particular, which produced the Harare Declaration of 1991 as a precondition for negotiations between the regime and anti-apartheid movement representatives, was also critical.

"Many of us, including myself, had thought that this might just be a trap. So, I was looking forward to the changes, but very apprehensive of the ingenuity of De Klerk," Skwatsha added.

Speaking of the country's development during the democratic period that followed, the speaker highlighted several issues in overcoming apartheid divisions, such as those in education. He also pointed to the electrification of rural areas as one of South Africa's "success stories."
