Zimbabwe’s Early Assessments Point to Promising Agricultural Season, With Potential Record Harvests

Good rainfall has improved crop and livestock conditions across all provinces, and early assessments point to a strong season, Permanent Secretary for Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development Professor Obert Jiri said.

Experts report that crops are thriving at all growth stages, with favorable rainfall supporting an above-average harvest. Most crops are in excellent condition, and livestock have benefited from better pastures. Farmers are advised to monitor pests and maintain regular weeding to ensure healthy yields.

Livestock are generally in fair to good condition, though wet conditions increase the risk of tick-borne diseases like theileriosis. Government programs, including the “tick grease blitz” and pastoral development initiatives, are supporting livestock health and overall agricultural productivity.

Despite the positive outlook, heavy rainfall poses risks. The Zimbabwe National Water Authority has warned that rising dam levels and river flows could cause downstream flooding. Communities are urged to take precautions, with farmers advised to ensure proper drainage and stay alert to flood threats.
