UN Peacekeeping Mission in DRC to Deploy First Team to Monitor Ceasefire with AFC/M23 Rebels: Qatar’s MFA

The team will be deployed to Uvira, a strategic city in eastern DRC that briefly fell to AFC/M23 fighters before government forces and allied militias regained control last month after the rebels announced their withdrawal, Qatar’s foreign ministry said.

The DRC and M23 agreed on detailed terms for the ceasefire monitoring mechanism established under an October agreement, reaffirming their commitments within the broader peace framework signed in November, the ministry stated.

MONUSCO, the UN mission in the country, has been planning a pullout from the country, but it has been postponed due to the instability in the North and South Kivu provinces.

Earlier, Russia's UNSC delegation questioned the actions of MONUSCO in the DRC amid media reports about members of foreign security companies taking refuge at the mission's base.
