Chaos Erupts in Somali Parliament as Opposition Blocks Constitution Vote, Media Report
Scuffles broke out after opposition lawmakers stormed the chamber, blocked entry points, and occupied the speaker’s seat to halt a session on constitutional amendments, local media reported.
Clashes reportedly erupted between MPs and security personnel, with several MPs injured, including Lawmaker Cadar Xareed, who was hospitalized with a leg injury (video 2).
Microphones and sound equipment were damaged, forcing full cancellation of the sitting.
Opposition claimed the amendments are incomplete and designed to extend government terms—a charge the federal government denies.
Tuesday’s confrontation follows parliamentary leadership’s decision to suspend 18 lawmakers just a day earlier for disrupting prior sessions.
