Fela Kuti Was 'More Than Musician': Nigerian President Honors Late Artist Following Posthumous Grammy Award
"He [Fela] was a fearless voice of the people, a philosopher of freedom, and a revolutionary force whose music confronted injustice and reshaped global sound," Bola Tinubu said in a statement.
🟠The Nigerian artist posthumously became the first African artist to receive a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, honored during a ceremony in Los Angeles.
🟠The award recognized Fela’s lasting global influence and his role in shaping modern African music.
🟠The late artist's children, including musician Femi Kuti, accepted the award, accompanied by Nigerian Afrobeat star Davido.
In the 1970s, Fela created Afrobeat—a fusion of jazz, funk, and African rhythms—which later paved the way for today’s globally popular Afrobeats genre.
