Nigeria Withdraws Support Battalion Deployed to Benin Following Coup Attempt: Beninese Gov't

Beninese authorities praised the Nigerian contingent for its “professionalism and solidarity” in helping restore stability, calling the joint operation a model of regional cooperation, according to a statement by the Beninese government.

Chief of the General Staff of the Beninese Armed Forces Gen. Fructueux Gbaguidi highlighted the effective coordination between the two nations’ forces and reaffirmed ECOWAS’s central role in safeguarding peace in West Africa.

A formal farewell ceremony was held for the roughly 200-strong Nigerian mechanized infantry battalion, deployed to Benin at President Talon’s request through ECOWAS to help secure institutions and stabilize the country after the December 2025 coup attempt, the statement noted.
