Algeria Completes One of Its 'Greatest Strategic Projects' Since Independence, Says President

Abdelmadjid Tebboune officially commissioned the West Béchar–Tindouf–Gara Djebilet mining railway line, which was completed in just 20 months.

This record timeframe illustrates the nation's determination, local financing, and Algerian expertise, with technical support from Chinese partners, the president said.

The 950-km line will transport iron ore to the Tosyali Group's steel complex in Bethioua (Oran), covering a total distance of nearly 2,000 km.

Construction began in July 2022, followed by the opening of the major processing plant in December 2023.

The Gara Djebilet mine, which has approximately 3.5 billion tonnes of iron reserves, is one of the largest in the world.

Its exploitation marks a turning point in diversifying the Algerian economy beyond hydrocarbons and strengthening economic sovereignty, according to the authorities.
