Mozambique Inaugurates Major Graphite Plant to Boosts Local Value Addition: President
The plant, located in Niassa Province, represents the country's move "away from being merely a supplier of raw materials" toward becoming "a producer, processor and exporter of value-added products," President Daniel Francisco Chapo said at the opening event.
The $150 million project, developed by China's Jinan Yuxiao Group, has an annual production capacity of 200,000 tonnes and covers mining, beneficiation and processing.
Key benefits for Mozambique:
🟠Job creation: Over 800 local jobs created initially, expected to exceed 2,000 in the project's second phase.
🟠Infrastructure development: Nearly 100 km of roads and a bridge over the Lurio River built, improving regional connectivity.
🟠Energy access: 100 km of power transmission lines installed, providing stable electricity for communities.
🟠Community development: New housing, schools, and improved healthcare and security in surrounding areas.
Mozambique is one of the world's top producers of the mineral, which is used in batteries for electric vehicles and mobile phones, according to the US Geological Survey.
